My Personal Story With Human Trafficking
I am here to bring awareness to a topic that's difficult to discuss, hear about or even acknowledge. But it must be addressed, and we ALL have to do our part, so I hope you'll take a moment to read about my cause.
I am going to share my personal story with you about human/sex trafficking and why it matters so much to me, as well as some insight on the realities of the world we live in today
When I turned 12, my mother sat me down and told me something that shook me to my core. She had been sold by a family member when she was 12 years old, to a 52-year-old man, who left the country with her and held her captive for 2 years, raping and beating her until she was brave enough to send for help and escape.
As if that wasn’t brutal enough, at the time she told me, I had already been sexually abused for one year at the age of 11 by a family member that my loving & generous parents had welcomed into our home when he was down on his luck and had nowhere else to go. No one ever knew about it until I spoke about it last year. 38 years later, after my parents and only sibling had passed away, I had finally worked up the courage to confront my abuser and take my power back. But not everyone is so lucky, that's why I hope to advocate for those who don't have a choice, or a voice. I hope to inspire those who are traumatized, that you can overcome anything and that you can find your joy and purpose, no matter how hopeless it feels right now.
Human trafficking can happen to anyone in any community across our country. Children of all ages, genders and races are trafficked every day. It happens every day, even in our own communities and most people aren't aware of it.
Although the realities of human trafficking are horrific, there is also hope! Through, Intervention and Prevention, we can end human trafficking in Canada. Survivors can heal. Families can be reunited. Justice can be served.
For decades, former MP Joy Smith has been a passionate advocate against human trafficking working tirelessly to raise awareness and most importantly, rescue and support survivors as they rebuild their lives. This annual fundraising event raises funds for the Joy Smith Foundation’s Prevention and Intervention programs.
Please join me in supporting this incredibly important cause and help make this year's Joy in Action in support of Joy Smith Foundation, one of the best one yet!
Thank you in advance for hearing my story and for supporting me in the fight to saving all the children that are affected!
